New York’s Most Dangerous School Zone

New York is home to over 8 million residents, so naturally the streets can be a dangerous place. If you’ve ever lived in NY (or even visited), you would agree that you always need to be aware of your surroundings while on the roads, especially as a cyclist or a pedestrian.  Although traffic fatalities New York City have decreased in the past ten years, pedestrian and cyclist deaths are actually increasing in numbers – especially around schools. In New York City, as many as 61 percent of students walk to school on an everyday basis.  The number is even higher when you include those who ride a bike to school. We wanted to find out how many accidents occur near school zones and which areas may pose a higher risk for those individuals.
The map below shows crashes as orange dots on the map. Schools are represented by semi-transparent circles. More orange dots inside a school zone means that area is more dangerous. The table below highlights the top 30 most dangerous school zones in the city.
